Before you call a pro
When your toilet's running or you have water up to your ankles in the tub, your first thought is probably to call a plumber. Hopefully you call your local Columbia CT plumber! But wait, sometimes there are simple solutions you can try first. We know that money doesn't grow on trees. We have 4 tips that might save you some money on plumbing repairs. If they don't work, you know who to call.
Running toilet
The sound is annoying and it could run your well dry. A running toilet can also run up your water bill if you're hooked up to city sewer. A leaking toilet can waste up to 24 gallons of water a day. That's like flushing your toilet 20 times for no reason!DIY Tip: Replace the flapper. You can find the part at your local hardware store and it isn't difficult to replace. The flapper is the rubber seal inside your toilet tank. Over time, the rubber gets old and rots. The seal isn't good anymore and causes your toilet to 'run.'
Backed up tub
Hair, shaving cream, soap - it all goes down the drain. That is, until one day, it doesn't. All these things can clog up a tub and leave you standing in water during your shower.DIY Tip: Remove the drain topper. Clean out the drain by scraping it to remove the offenders. Doing this on a regular basis can prevent a clog AND prevent water waste.
Clogged toilet
Too much toilet paper, unpleasant medication side effects, or flushing wipes can all cause a clogged toilet. Before you reach for the phone to call a pro plumber, reach for the plunger first.DIY Tip: Use the correct plunger. Use a "flange" plunger. This type of plunger has a small cup inside the bigger cup. First, grab some towels to clean up any water that might splash out. Then, create a good seal and push in and out vigorously. Finally, make sure to keep the plunger covered in water and repeat the process until the clog lets loose. Most of the time, a plunger will work with the right technique.
Stopped up shower
Just like your tub, everything used during your daily bathing goes down the drain. If you've had a long day at work or with the kids, the shower is supposed to be your stress-free zone, NOT another issue on your plate.DIY Tip: Use a "cup" plunger. Unlike a "flange" plunger, it doesn't have a protruding part inside the cup. Create a strong seal by placing the plunger over the entire drain. Thrust downward several times to break up the blockage.
