A clogged drain is a common repair we complete. The problem usually starts out as a slow drain. Common causes of clogged drains are hair buildup, food particles, baby wipes and grease. A chemical cleaner, a bucket of hot water or a plunger may have been used by a homeowner with no luck. Life gets in the way and the days fly by with higher priority items. The slow drain eventually turns into a completely clogged drain.
Clogged drain in Columbia CT
One of our plumbing technicians was called out to a home with slow drains. The photos below revealed the cause - years of food and grease buildup:
The cast iron pipe had started to deteriorate. There was no way to make a simple repair or snake the drain without everything crumbling away. We completed a repiping job and the drains were flowing effortlessly by the end of the day.
Prevent a clogged drain
Avoid putting the above-mentioned items into the drain. Hair traps can be found at your local hardware store and are fairly inexpensive. We also recommend routinely using a drain treatment. A drain treatment is NOT the same as a liquid plumber chemical. A drain treatment is a preventative measure, much like we use a multi-vitamin to ward off future illnesses. We use the BioClean system. It's chemical-free and safe for septic systems and your home's plumbing system. It's made up of enzymes and bacteria that "eat" away at the sludge that builds up in your pipes. It's cost-effective for two reasons:- One canister has up to 100 drain treatments in it.
- It's much less expensive than a major plumbing repair bill.
