What is World Plumbing Day?
The World Plumbing Council initiated March 11th as an international day of awareness of the important role of plumbing in modern society. Many people go about their day-to-day routines unaware of how plumbers protect the safety and health of their nations. Not every country is as lucky as the US. Many people, including millions of children, die each day due to unsafe drinking water or no access to water at all. World Plumbing Day was created to create the necessary conversations to make a change.
Water For Life
In conjunction with World Plumbing Day, the United Nations declared 2005-2015 to be the international decade focusing on water-related issues and created solutions."This initiative is of extraordinary importance in a world where preventable diseases related to water and sanitation claim the lives of about 3.1 million people per year, most of them children less than 5 years old. Of these, about 1.6 million people die each year of diarrheal diseases associated with lack of safe drinking water and adequate sanitation."
Environmental safety
In addition to health concerns, clean water is important to our environment. Plumbers face the challenge of not only protecting our water for human consumption but for animals and vegetation as well. Sewage systems and water conservation are two areas that plumbers are constantly working to improve. Many plumbers are implementing 'green' practices. This includes the installation of low-flush toilets and low-flow showerheads, as well as greener clog removing methods and materials used in water filtration systems.
