Backed up drains are usually house guests that overstay their welcome after a holiday of entertaining. The week following Thanksgiving keeps is the busiest week of the year for plumbers. We have a few solutions for backed up drains.
Prevent clogs
Having a lot of people in your home, in a short burst of time, can tax your home's plumbing system. Sometimes, things get flushed down the toilet that shouldn't. Common items that cause backed up drains are tampons, sanitary napkins and small items that accidentally got knocked into the toilet. When preparing your home for guests, we recommend that you clear any decor from the back of your toilet and near your sinks. Place wastepaper baskets in easy-to-reach and highly visible areas.Food preparation is another culprit that causes backed up drains. Vegetable peels should be disposed in the garbage can, not the sink or garbage disposal. Bones should also never be placed in the garbage disposal. Drippings from the bird should be poured into a heat-resistant container then thrown into the trash.

Solutions for backed up drains
A plunger can be used for minor clogs. Just be sure you have the correct plunger for the job. There is one plunger especially made for toilets, and another type for drains like you find in the kitchen.A mix of boiling water and vinegar can also dislodge a backed up drain. However, if an object is lodged in the drain, this method will not help.
Many homeowners use an array of drain cleaners to clear backed up drains. This is a "solution" that we do NOT recommend. Why? 1) It is almost never a solution. 2) The harsh chemicals do more harm than good for both your pipes and the environment. 3) The chemicals can burn you or a plumbing professional if more intensive service needs to be done.
