What are Tamper Resistant Receptacles?
These receptacles look like normal outlets. The major difference is that TRRs have a built-in shutter system that prevents foreign objects from being inserted. As babies turn into youngsters, their curiosity is at an all-time high. Since they are mostly non-verbal, the only way they 'know' how to learn is by DOING. This includes putting things where they shouldn't, including electrical outlets. For about an additional 50 cents to $2, Tamper Resistant Receptacles can save your child's life. They are not a special order item. They can easily be found at any local supply store.TRRs have been proven so effective at electrocution prevention, that the National Electric Code now REQUIRES them to be installed in all new home construction.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International is a wonderful resource to learn more about electrical safety for your home. They've provided the following statistics that explain the importance of including these receptacles in your baby-proofing plans:- Each year 2,400 children suffer severe shock and burns resulting from inserting objects into the slots of electrical receptacles. That’s nearly seven children a day.
- It is estimated that 6-12 child fatalities result from children tampering with electrical receptacles.
- Installing a TRR in a newly constructed home is only about 50 cents more than a traditional receptacle.
- Existing homes can be retrofitted with TRRs for as little as $2.00 per outlet.
