What Is A Well Tank?

Private well system

A well tank is found in the basement of many Eastern CT homes. If your home has a well, there are three main parts to the system: the well itself [1], a well pump [2], and a well tank [3].

water system, well pump, well tank, well, storage tank, private well

Most wells in our area are drilled deep and require a submersible well. A submersible well pump sits in the bottom of the well and pumps the water up into your home. The water is stored in a well tank. You may also call it or know it as a "water tank" or "storage tank."

What is the lifespan of a well tank?

A well tank can last about 10-15 years. That lifespan can be expected IF the tank has regular maintenance and you have good water quality. If you have hard water, the internal parts of the tank can corrode and it will fail. The "bladder" or "diaphragm" inside the tank is what usually fails. The bladder is what controls the pressure inside the tank. The outside of the tank itself can also begin to rust through and it will begin to leak. If you notice low water pressure in your home, or water in your basement around this equipment, you should contact a licensed plumber.

A professional plumber will be able to provide different options for replacement. There are different sizes depending on the size of your family, and how much water is used daily. If the tank is too small, it can put stress on your well pump and eventually burn it out. A well pump is MUCH more expensive to replace. Your well water system should be looked at as a whole in order to maintain it properly and prevent costly unexpected repairs.
